Mikoshi is a portable shrine (or sacred palanquin) which is paraded through the streets as a Shinto festival artifact.

The Shinto festivals usually take place annually between early summer from the fall at shrines all over Japan. The god in the shrine is taken out on Mikoshi, which is then carried by the local people around the vicinity of the shrine. It is thought that the divine power from Mikoshi drive the evil spirits away. Among them all, one of the most popular festivals in Tokyo is Sanja festival. It not only attracts the local people but also the festival fanatics from all over Japan.

The climax comes when more than a million of people gather around the three Mikoshi on the final day.
